The escalating climate crisis is severely affecting coffee production worldwide. Coffee plants are highly sensitive to temperature, rainfall, and seasonal weather patterns, and even minor fluctuations in these conditions can throw off flowering and fruiting. Rising global temperatures are forcing viable growing zones to shift upward in elevation, where high-altitude plots are already scarce, often overlapping with indigenous communities.

The world’s top coffee exporters including Brazil, Colombia, and Ethiopia, farmers are witnessing lower crop outputs and diminished bean quality as heat stress interferes with flowering and fruit development. The intensity of heatwaves is accelerating plant stress, leading to underdeveloped cherries.

Inconsistent wet and dry seasons pose another critical threat. Excessive rainfall create ideal conditions for devastating pathogens including coffee leaf rust—a disease that has ravaged Central American farms over the past decade. Conversely, extended droughts suppress cherry formation, resulting in smaller harvests. These extreme weather events are occurring more frequently, rendering planning unreliable for farmers to predict harvest times.

Over 80% of global coffee—who cultivate the world’s coffee, are disproportionately impacted. Few have access to the capital to invest in agroforestry networks, drought-resistant water systems, or disease-resistant coffee varieties. As a consequence many to switch to alternative crops, undermining community stability, and jeopardizing the global coffee supply chain.

Adaptation initiatives are emerging, such as selecting tolerant varietals, restoring shade ecosystems, and پارتاک کافی improving soil and water management.
